  9. RIP Lena, you are very special lady who absolutely didn't like to put anyone out or cause a fuss, which you never did! I was surprised to find out that you knew my late mother's family and enjoyed conversations of your early nursing days. You will be remembered with fondness. Heartfelt condolences to Lena's family.

  11. Mum,

I continue to be in awe and overwhelmed at times, by the love generated and joy you bought to so many with the way you lived your life, helped those in need of some mothering/friendship and/or they needed your skills as a midwife.

I share Mary’s story re mum, but have to say, it is one I hear several times a day whilst preparing a celebration of the great life you led.

My mum passed away peacefully in her sleep early last Monday morning, just as she wished.

The staff at the hospital were amazing with their compassion , empathy and skill.

It has been a great time with mum and one for my memory bank.

The stories continue to come forth about her skill, compassion, pragmatism, generosity, courage and caring as a midwife, colleague, grandmother, mother, great grandmother, friend, MIL and Aunty- (not in any order)

Your activity as a midwife continues to astound us and makes us even more proud to be your children grandchildren and great grandies.

One story I will share comes from one of mums great friends.

For over 7 years they had lunch on a Sunday at one or other of our sporting clubs here in the town.

They had their meals, then did some finger exercising on the pokies. (Love this description Mary)

Mary mentioned that, not a Sunday would go by, in all the 7 years they did this, that mum wasn’t approached by someone, enthusiastically pronouncing respectfully and in awe “Is this Sister Hammond?“ Then went on to always say - Thank-you to mum and explain how she saved her, the person who was talking, or was there assisting her to have a safe delivery of their baby, and/or on numerous occasions, they would become a little emotional as she, through her skill and determination, had actually saved their baby.

Mary said mum remembered all these women and their children and, an enthusiastic conversation would continue with mum adding to the story in away that continued to make these woman feel special.

Mary said at one time, Annie, I said to your mum “Lena you must have delivered at least half of Warrnambool”

I can say not a day has gone past since this all started on 7th July that, I, like Mary, have not had someone talk to me about mum this way.

It is amazing to know how valued she is and how humble she was.

There is a tremendous amount we could write about mum’s life and the courage she had to live it her way, but remember Annie “No fuss” as if I ever did everything my mum said LoL

I just hope that the other side is as we discussed ie. one that you have dad, Aunty O all your family and great friends to help you and that you have been able to give your great Grandies Ned and Jack the biggest huge and kisses

Xxx your “What are you up to now Annie “
