G.B. your smile has left it's mark upon my world, and
Even your barbs were like cut diamonds that you hurled,
...But now you're gone, it's such a sad thing, and as we dissolve into dark
Behind these questions are these answers and this song's to say goodbye (Clark & Peno, 1991)September 08, 2022 6:16 pm
Dear Gary
How lucky I am to have known you as first a student, then my colleague and friend at Deakin University. Your intelligence, sharp wit, humility and quiet determination won high respect from the Deakin community and wider academic circles. You were a reluctant but shining star. You paved the way for others. Thank you for the privilege of knowing the very private you. I’ll fondly remember all your achievements and especially the laughs. I forgive Roy for biting me. Rest In Peace Gary. I’ll miss you. Condolences to all of the Barling family, Gary’s friends and carers. Gone but never forgotten. Jan JohnsonSeptember 08, 2022 3:01 pm

What a witty, intelligent and resilient fella. I'll make my way to the home of Rory Gallagher on his behalf - someday. Rest in peace Gary and try to keep us all on the right road from up above. X

Thinking of Mrs Barling, Peter and Leanne, Jenny, Mark, Sharon and their families. I have such vivid memories of Gary sitting on my knee while I read him books. I can still picture him at Tait Crescent with all those curls and those big eyes. I was very happy when I received a friend request from Gary on facebook, it made me feel a part of his adult life too. Rest peacefully Gary.

Love and condolences to Mrs Barling and the family.
An honour to have shared the journey with you Wharfy: the music, the cards nights, the discussions and debates, the adventures and misadventures, the Coopers Green and Melbourne Bitters, the whiskey, and the late night tomfoolery. Will always remember your wisdom and empathy, that sardonic wit, your love of words - especially when deployed for the castigation of those foolish enough to underestimate you (myself included on occasion).
So much I’ll miss, but so much you’ve left with us - apart from your many achievements, a blazing, unconquerable spirit etched in the memories of those lucky enough to have known you.
Rest easy, my brilliant friend.
