  5. David McPhail was a member of the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club from the late 1940’s onwards. He was a committee member for over 50 years and President for six years. He was awarded Life Membership of the Club in 1982.

A bricklayer by trade, David was renowned for a handshake that would make strong men cringe!

While not the most accomplished player to grace the courts, David devoted his energies to making the Club a better place. He played an instrumental role in developing the Club facilities over seventy years, and a man whose opinions were sought out, and valued. David was known to provide direct feedback which was always accurate, but delivered with a twinkle in his eye! He provided wonderful guidance for Presidents who followed him.

He was proud of his long and valued contribution, and was delighted when the Club recently won the Newcombe Medal award for the Most Outstanding Tennis Tournament in Australia.

The Club will continue to meet the exceptionally high standards he demanded for court one, even without his direct supervision – his legacy will live on.

    Vale our dear friend Dave.
