  3. I attended Julie’s funeral service today and was very moved by the words of those who loved her and shared various aspects of her life. I was witness to an incredible, but not surprising, outpouring of love and respect for Julie and all she has achieved and for all the people she had touched, including myself. I never saw Julie’s amazing garden or met her family in person, but she spoke of them all so often. I knew her as an incredible mind and a very caring, articulate, exacting person. As I write at the dining table in my home, I recall her sitting in the chair next to me at the wine appreciation sessions I held here and her insatible need for information about what she was tasting. She had to know and I had such respect for that. Yes, she was a perfectionist (I relate) and she had a very dry wit (another aspect I admired) and for which she often had us in stitches of laughter, and she was equally warm and so very caring. When I had very little, she gave me kitchen items she had stored away to give her son when he left home and she gave them to me to help start my life again in a new home, and every time I use that knife block and those saucepans I think of Julie (so, every day) in the last 6 years. She was my academic colleague ‘down the corridor’at Deakin Warrnambool and an avid wine appreciator which drew us together, but she is so much more than that in my heart.
She is truly a woman I admired, respected and cared for.
I learned so much more about her today and for that I am very grateful.

  18. I was very sad to learn of the untimely passing of ‘Mrs Buckley’. I first came into contact with Julie as a Year 12 student at Brauer College. She motivated an unmotivated student to excel in her subject Human Development & Society. She was just a graduate teacher then and clearly had a gift for teaching.

We then crossed paths again as colleagues at Deakin University and shared a few laughs when I would, without thinking, address her as ‘Mrs Buckley’.

Julie was such a beautiful, warm and endearing person. My thoughts are with her husband Robert and beloved son Thomas. RIP ‘Mrs Buckley’ spread your education gift in heaven.
